Book Review: Finding Gobi
Author: Tobias Mews
List Price: £12.99
In 2016, Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner, unexpectedly stumbled across a little stray dog while competing in a gruelling 155 mile race across the Gobi Desert. The lovable pup, who earned the name ‘Gobi’, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the treacherous Tian Shan Mountains, managing to keep pace with him for nearly 80 miles.
As Dion witnessed the incredible determination of this small animal, he felt something change within himself. In the past he had always focused on winning and being the best, but his goal now was simply to make sure that his new friend was safe, nourished and hydrated. Although Dion did not finish first, he felt he had won something far greater and promised to bring Gobi back to the UK for good to become a new addition to his family. This was the start of a journey neither of them would ever forget with a roller coaster ride of drama, grief, heartbreak, joy and love that changed their lives forever.
Finding Gobi is the ultimate story of hope, of resilience and of friendship, proving once again, that dogs really are ‘man’s best friend.
The book was bought for me as a gift, and while I'm definitely an animal lover, I'm not sure I would have picked this out to read myself.
I started reading with a little trepidation, but found the writing style and pace of the book entertaining as there is a good mix between the authors background and the journey and preparation for the ultra running race. Having taken part in a couple of events some distance from home, I could relate to the travel worries, but China just adds a whole layer of complexity on top, and this comes across really clearly.
The meeting of the man and the dog appears just circumstantial, luck or fate.. yellow gaters attracting the dogs attention as they start the run - but the subsequent bonding and partnership they form is one that will have all true animal lovers smiling... we know!!
The extraordinary team run together for a few days through really tough terrain and this is where the main story really begins, as the author decides he is going to bring "Gobi" home with him back to Scotland!
The following months track various states of hope, amazement, despair, worry and also solitude as the author goes to extreme lengths (along with others) to bring the dog home across cultural divides, huge distances and red tape.
If someone gave the precis of the story as a pitch for a film, I'm not sure you would believe it... but it makes a great read!
